A Little Background

The Worldwide Church of God, led by Herbert W. Armstrong, had its faults and foibles, as so many people today are quick to point out.

On the negative side, many people are still hampered to this day in their spiritual development because of real or imagined mistreatment they suffered at the hands of local pastors, church members, or headquarters personnel, or because of doctrinal understandings with which they disagree today.  Some people have been so disgusted about perceived sins, problems, and human frailties of the leadership of WCG that they have given up on God altogether, and no longer look to Jesus Christ as their Savior, Messiah, or King.  This is a classic case of throwing out the Baby with the bath water.  Others have been so hurt by experiences with authority figures in the church that they are left with a mistrust of anyone who might even remotely represent leadership.

On the positive side, though, there were a great multitude of people who learned an incredible amount of Bible knowledge, and the truth of what the scriptures really have to say, from the WCG.  Many people have come out of their Worldwide experience with their faith in God intact -- even strengthened.  Many people realize that God was, indeed, able to use Herbert Armstrong and the WCG to bring people to a knowledge of the truth, in spite of the human weaknesses that may have been all too apparent at headquarters and out in the field churches.

We have seen, in the aftermath of WCG, some people who are cry-babies, while others cry aloud and spare not the voice.  Some are at peace with themselves, and some find themselves in pieces.  Some have had their spirits broken, while others have broken out and grown tremendously in the Spirit.  Some still respond to the warm mothering of a church organization, while others look directly to Jerusalem above as the mother of us all.  Some have become disspirited, others are abounding in Spirit.  Some still revere the memory of Herbert Armstrong; some would like to drag his body through the streets.

Many of these people have begun web sites.

The links that are listed on this page are a testimony to the pervasive Spirit of Truth that has kept so many people going in the same direction after the death of Herbert Armstrong and the change in direction the WCG followed under its new leadership.

Sure WCG made mistakes in doctrine.  As an organization, it was flawed.  But there are a great many people who realize, with gratitude, that if it had not been for the WCG, they might not have the spiritual knowledge and insight they now have.  God might have been able to call each of us and train us in a different way, but He didn't.  He chose to take us through the nursery of the WCG.  Since that time, we have had to stand on our own feet, learn to make our own decisions, try to determine for ourselves, with God's help, what is right and wrong, and to grow up out of our babyhood and dependence into children of our Father who are growing, learning, developing, and turning out to be children in whom He can be proud.

As you visit these web sites, remember that we are still family.  We may have different understandings, and we may disagree about some doctrinal stand or another.  But God is watching us, not to see if we have the right doctrines, but if we have the right attitude.  We may never be able to achieve any kind of doctrinal purity or doctrinal unity in this life.  There's really little in scripture about that, compared to the innumerable multitude of scriptures admonishing us to love one another, put up with one another, encourage one another, edify one another, and so forth.

1   If with the tongues of men and of messengers I speak, and have not love, I have become brass sounding, or a cymbal tinkling;
2  and if I have prophecy, and know all the secrets, and all the knowledge, and if I have all the faith, so as to remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing;
3  and if I give away to feed others all my goods, and if I give up my body that I may be burned, and have not love, I am profited nothing.
        (1 Corinthians 13:1-3, Young's Literal Translation, 1898)

We sincerely hope the tide is turning.  In many of the "corp orgs" (the corporate organizations that strive to continue "the church" as we knew it), the tide turns slowly, for the same crew is still at the helm, often firing volleys at their former comrades.  In the independent groups and living room fellowships, farther away from the noise of the "turf wars" being fought by the clergy, the people are more free to hear and follow the leading of the Spirit.

Enjoy visiting your family.  Tell them we said "hi."

And could we leave out the web site of the current Worldwide Church of God?  Of course we could!  But we didn't.  It might be of interest to see and compare how far removed the ideas and ideals of today's WCG are from those of the people and organizations listed above.  Because of the WCG's doctrinal direction, it should be evident that the current church bears little or no resemblance to the original organization as it went forward under its founder and leader of fifty years, Herbert Armstrong.  It remains up to the individual to determine which doctrinal changes are good and which are bad, which ones move closer to the truth and which move farther away, and if the WCG of today is a better place, a worse place, or an altogether different place.
