Once, in a small town, there was a small cemetary. Just inside the fence was a huge old nut tree, providing shade over the area.
One day, two boys filled up a bucket with nuts from the tree, and sat down by the tree, out of sight, to divide the nuts. "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me," intoned one boy. The bucket was so full, two of the nuts fell out of the bucket and rolled down toward the fence. But the boys were so busy counting out the nuts, they just left them there.
At that moment, cycling down the road by the cemetery was a third boy. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me."
He knew what it was! "Oh my gosh!" he shuddered. "It's Satan and St.Peter dividing up the souls at the cemetery!"
He cycled down the road as fast as he could until he came to an old man with a cane, hobbling along. "Come quick!" he said excitedly. "You won't believe what I heard. Satan and St. Peter are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls."
The old man scoffed and said, "Shoo, you young scoundrel! Can't you see I'm finding it hard to walk as it is?"
After several pleas from the young lad, the old man finally agreed, and hobbled down the road toward the cemetery. When they arrived, they distinctly heard the voice saying, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one..." The old man whispered, "Boy, you's been tellin' the truth! That IS Satan and St. Peter dividin' up the souls! Let's see if we can sneak up and get a look at the Devil himself."
Quivering with fear and excitement, the man and the boy inched toward the fence. They were still unable to see anything, but just as they got to the fence they heard the voice say, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me. And one last one for you. That's all of 'em. Now let's go get those two nuts by the fence, and we'll be done."
They say the old guy made it to town ten minutes before the boy!
