Obesity is a complex disease and one that we don’t know everything about at the moment. However, we are certainly sure that it’s a lifestyle disease, one that sprouts from a life riddled with inactivity. It’s time to learn more about this disease and how it’s an ongoing epidemic in the US.

There is an obesity epidemic ongoing in the U.S. The prevalence of obesity in the US is about 40%, one of the highest globally, and it continues to increase every year. It’s considered one of the common diseases in the US and one of the most expensive.

It’s estimated that obesity costs the country over $170 billion annually—an individual obese American pays at least $1,900 on maintenance medication and treatment. On top of these costs, obese individuals also experience severe health complications throughout their lives.

Obesity and Health

Obese people are vulnerable to all sorts of illnesses. One of the most common comorbidities of obesity is heart disease. Heart disease is a fatal disease, and it’s considered the main reason for death in the US. About 600,000 Americans die from heart disease, and many are obese. Another common deadly disease that is often comorbid with obesity is diabetes.
Diabetes is known to be an insidious killer and one that causes extreme discomfort to those who have it. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the leading causes of death in the US, taking about 80,000 Americans annually. Once again, many people with diabetes are also obese.
Obesity is one of the leading causes of these dangerous diseases. Moreover, the expenses and overall physical state of an obese person can lead to severe problems in living one’s life. Therefore, many experts believe that prevention is better than cure, which is valid for people with obesity.

Stop it While You Can

Obesity becomes more problematic as time goes on. As a person gains more weight, the more inactive they become. Once they become more inactive, they can’t stop obesity from claiming their life. Once you see that you’re becoming overweight, start implementing these lifestyle changes immediately.

We’re not asking you to join your nearest gym and start working out every day. We’re not asking you to go into a cross-fit program either. Extensive exercise, which builds body mass quickly, is more likely to cause obesity if you don’t maintain it every day. If you want to lose weight, the main thing you should use is your body.

Sleep Well

Insufficient sleep and insomnia can also contribute to obesity. If you’re having problems sleeping, then you need to improve your bed or practice new sleeping habits. Adopting new sleeping habits such as reducing phone usage before sleep can also help you gain better quality sleep at night.

Omega-3 Diet

Omega-3 fatty acids have been known to prevent obesity among adults. Moreover, this nutrient is found in many ingredients found in the US, such as vegetable oil and nuts. It’s also found in salmon and other fishes. If you want to have a diet that works well in preventing obesity, make sure to add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet.

Fiber-rich diets have also been known to help with digestion. If your metabolism is good, then you’re less likely to store unused fats in your body. Ensure to look for ingredients that have both of these nutrients to prevent obesity later in your life.

Changing the way we live is crucial in preventing obesity, but just as we have learned, sometimes it’s not entirely our fault. Our genes and other biological processes can lead to obesity. However, even though these factors exist, it’s important for us to get through them. With enough dedication and resilience, you should prevent obesity from happening in your life.
