Hair extensions are stylish and versatile. They help give your hair extra volume. That’s why they are a crowd favorite when it comes to styling. But they won’t last long if you don’t know how to care for them properly.

Here are some dos and don’ts you should follow when you get hair extensions, such as the popular keratin fusion hair extensions:

Do avoid going for a swim

Chlorinated or salty water can damage hair extensions, especially the ones made from real human hair. So, avoid swimming or do so sparingly. And if you really need to go swimming, make sure that you protect your hair properly. You can reduce the risk of getting your hair extensions wet by wearing a swim cap.

Do Use Sulfate-Free Products

The sulfate in shampoo and other hair products can strip your hair of its natural oils. This will make your hair extensions brittle, dry, and prone to tangling. To avoid this, make sure to use sulfate-free hair products to maintain the luster and moisture of your hair and extensions. You can also use creams, oils, leave-in conditioners, and other styling products. But make sure that you don’t get any on the bonds that glue your hair extensions to your scalp.

Do Use the Right Hair Extension Brush

Experts advise that you brush your hair regularly. Brushing your hair two or three times a day should be enough. However, you can’t just use a regular hairbrush, as you might end up pulling your extensions out. Make sure to use a special detangler brush specifically made for hair extensions. And even when you do use this special type of brush, you still need to be extra careful so that you don’t accidentally uproot the bonds.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often

Avoid washing your hair too often, as this could cause the bonds to slip and fall off your hair. This is because regular shampoo contains harsh minerals that can damage and weaken the bonds. Washing your hair two times a week should be enough. You can also try using dry shampoo to help restore your hair’s freshness.

Don’t Sleep with Your Hair Wet

Sleeping with your hair wet will not just cause tangling. It can also weaken the bonds of your hair extensions and cause extensive shedding. This will make brushing difficult — and painful. So, make sure to dry your hair completely before going to bed at night. It would also help if you can tie your hair in a loose ponytail or braid.

Don’t expose your extensions to too much heat

Overexposure to heat — whether from the sun or styling tools — can damage your natural hair. The same thing is true for your hair extensions. So, always apply a heat protectant on your hair if you want your extensions to last longer.

Hair extensions are, without a doubt, amazing. They can help add volume to your hair and make you look and feel fabulous. Moreover, they do not take too much work. However, do take note that the quality of installation largely depends on the skills of your stylist.
